There are five objectives in this lesson. The students know about dirt, but they do not know more about germs. This lesson would help them achieve the above objectives in order to keep them safe but most of all healthy. The first rule of cleanliness is to wash hands after visiting the toilet, before meals and after coming into contact with any dirty substance (Santoro, 396). This ensures that a person is clean and healthy all the time. In order to enable students to understand, the teacher would ask some questions to the students about the places they thought they would get germs. This participation would help children to understand the areas they should avoid or the areas they should be careful in if they want to remain healthy. The teacherââ¬â¢s main objective was to demonstrate to the children how they got germs. She took them for a field trip around the school. They made several stops at the washrooms, the garbage, and the playing ground. These are the main areas where the children get germs from most of the time ( Santoro, 397). The teacher would show them how they get germs from the three areas then show them how to wash their hands using soaps in order to keep them germ free. After the discussion, the teacher took them to the science laboratory to enable them to see the clean studentââ¬â¢s hands and the dirty ones. Two students, one with clean hands, and the other dirty hands would look through a microscope to check on the germs. Students found it rather disturbing as to how many germs they handle in a day. Application of thinking skills The teacher would pose a question to the whole class in order to make sure that they would think and answer the questions wisely. Of course, not all students would know the answers, but through discussion and participation, they would learn from the answers that their classmates are giving to the class. Still, when working, people should always utilize office equipment such that they are only used when needed. Things that are not usually used should be powered off but things that are mostly used should not be turned off every time because constantly switching them on and off can use up more energy. Frederick Douglass 1 How did the early years of Frederick Douglassââ¬â¢ life affect the beliefs of the man he would become? Frederick Douglassââ¬â¢ adulthood was one of triumph and prestige. Still, he by no means gained virtue without struggle and conflict. There was much opposition and hostility against him. To fully understand all his thoughts and beliefs first one must look at his childhood. Frederick Augustus Bailey was born in February of 1818 to a black field hand named Harriet. He grew up on the banks of the Tuckahoe Creek deep within the woods of Maryland. Separated from his mother at an early age, he was raised by his grandparents Betsy and Isaac Bailey. Isaac and Betsy are not thought to be related. Isaac was a free man and a sawyer, while Betsy was an owned slave, but she kept her own rules. Her owner trusted her to watch over and raise the children of the slaves until they were old enough to begin their labor. She was allowed to keep her own cabin, and to farm food for the children and herself. It was not an easy job. While all of the mothers were busy working in the fields of their master, Aaron Anthony, she was busy watching over their infants. Betsy Bailey was quite a woman. She was a master fisher, and spent most of her days in the river or in the field farming. She was very intelligent and physically able bodied. Most historians credit Frederick ââ¬â¢s intelligence to his extraordinary grandmother. Douglass later recalled not seeing his mother very often, just on the few times she would come to visit later in his life. At the age of six, Frederickââ¬â¢s carefree days of running and playing in the fields and came to an abrupt end. As head of court Danforth also holds pull within Salem and is able to make his views known and perhaps persuade a few to adopt them. He is a figure of authority yet shows much prejudice and allows no one to change his mind. Proctor and Danforth, two men of unmistakable force face each other in court when John is charged with witchcraft. Many of those charged with witchcraft within The Crucible admit to the crime even though they did not commit it and blame others in order to save themselves, however John Proctors honesty and values lead him to tell the truth in court and admit that he believes the whole situation to be a scandal. His truth telling eventually leads to his death however if this would prove his and his friends innocence then this is a price he feels he has to pay. His motivation is his pride and his morals and to show he community the ridiculousness of the situation. He wishes to combat Abbyââ¬â¢s revenge. In order to prove Abigail Williams is not to be trusted and has merely set out to punish him he tells the court that she is a whore and that they had an affair together. When asked about this Elizabeth goes against every moral fibre and lies saying that he did not commit adultery to the court in order to save her husband against charges of lechery, or so she believes. This is dramatic irony as the audience knows this is far from the truth and by lying she is in fact ultimately sentencing him to death. Proctor is angered and frustrated by the behaviour of the community and the court and he declares that ââ¬Å"God is deadâ⬠. The court and majority of the community take this as an admission of guilt, and that this proves he is at one with the devil; however the audience know that it is to the contrary. It means that there can be no God if there is such injustice in the world. Both Danforth and Hale wish Proctor to confess but for very different reasons. Danforth wishes to be branded a hero for rooting out those involved in witchcraft and getting to the bottom of the situation and ceasing all panic where as hale feels guilty that his teachings have lead to many innocent menââ¬â¢s lives being taken and he wishes to prevent this from happening if possible however he cannot prevent the other prisoners from sacrificing there lives in order to retain there self respect. Before Proctors sentence, those put to death were of a low class and seen as socially unimportant yet this did not matter to Proctor as every life taken was a travesty to him and this contributes to the fact that he denies involvement in witchcraft after consideration. Elizabeth is distraught that proctor will hang, they have an understanding that this is the only was forward for them. All they wish for is forgiveness from one another before the deed is done. ââ¬ËI have deeds of my own to count. It needs a cold wife to prompt lecheryââ¬â¢ Elizabeth is finally taking some of the blame for Johns adultery. They wish to clear the air before he is put to death. Elizabeth also wishes for Proctor to forgive himself also. ââ¬Ëit comes to naught that I should forgive you if you not forgive yourself. ââ¬Ë Proctor love for his family and wife leads him to sign the paper of admission and live for them however he realises he cannot go through with it and go against his own morals. ââ¬ËHow can I live without my name? I have given you my soul, leave my name! ââ¬Ë This shows that he believes if he lies he would be sacrificing his name which all he has left of his pride and it would be tainted, and thus in his eyes, unworthy of life. The fact he is sacrificing his life in order to show the ridiculousness of the whole situation is heroic even though he has partially upon himself as his intimidating status and admission of lechery lead the community to expect the worst of him. Throughout the play Arthur Miller is trying to address the issues of McCarthyism and human weakness. He is attempting to show how small incidents can be blown out of proportion if jealousy and other human weaknesses are involved. He shows the human tendency to conform and how this can lead to downfall. He emphasises the importance of truth and loyalty as through death proctor gains respect for himself and saves the community from even more widespread destruction. Some were successful after many failed attempts at escaping (Rodriguez 34). Most slaves escaped to the border states neighboring Free states where they moved to the North where there were freedoms for their lives. Young men found it easier to escape as they were most likely to be sold and were hired out to serve as errand men in other plantations. There were sympathizers who helped slaves escape to the North especially in the 19th century. Most slaves escaped by foot and threw stones to dogs that chased after them, while others stole horses from their masters or hid in ships. In the 19th century, a huge number of slaves escaped to gain freedom (Elkins 35). Slaves also used day-to-day resistance as a form of resistance like sabotage of breaking farming tools setting fire to buildings and striking down slaves that were considered as ownerââ¬â¢s property. Some slaves faked sickness and played dumb and this slowed down work at the plantations. Women were able to feign illness to escape working conditions that were harsh and unbearable (Reese 211). Economics of Slavery During the American Revolution, it was considered as a national institution because the number of slaves was considerably small. The slaves lived and worked in every colony that were established in American states. Before the Constitution was ratified, some states in the Northern were abolishing slavery (Du Bois 59). The Northwest Ordinance 1787 made slavery illegal in the North and this meant that slavery existed in the South. Between the period of 1790 and the period of Civil War, slaves in America increased and buying of such slaves was common. Around 1820 slavery was mostly in tobacco especially in Virginia, North Carolina, and Kentucky. The spread of cotton slavery reached Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana (Elkins 55). The Slave trade had its benefits to the Europeans as they controlled labor of millions of people, which is connected to the growth of industrialization in Europe, capitalization, population growth and scientific evolution. It is also connected to change in social role in families and migration. This benefit came from selling slaves from African Kingdoms whereby most slaves were from the Caribbean and Brazil.
